High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a serious health problem that can lead to heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. A blood pressure reading of 140/90 mm Hg or above is considered high.

Common causes or contributing factors of hypertension are obesity, genetic factors, excessive drinking, high salt intake, lack of aerobic exercise, stress, birth control pills, pain relievers, kidney disease, and adrenal disease. 1. Diet and Weight Loss

Being overweight puts increases pressure on artery walls. If overweight, a weight loss diet to bring body weight into a healthy range may help to reduce blood pressure. In addition to a diet that emphasizes whole, fresh fruits and vegetables and lean protein, juicing vegetables may help to increase one's intake of vegetables.

Vegetable juice, particularly from green leafy vegetables, can increase folic acid, a B vitamin that may help to lower high blood pressure in some people, possibly by reducing elevated homocysteine levels. Dark leafy greens are also high in potassium. A meta-analysis of five trials indicated that potassium supplementation compared to a control resulted in a large but statistically non-significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (mean difference 11.2 mm Hg) and diastolic blood pressure (5.0 mm hg). 

2. Banana

Banana contains potassium in high amount. It is a rich source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, and magnesium. If a banana is consumed every day, high blood pressure can be controlled. Along with banana, raisins, dried apricot, currants, orange juice, spinach, sweet potatoes (baked), and winter squash also works wonder.

3. Grapefruit

Grapefruit contains Vitamin P, which is very effective in lowering high blood pressure. Therefore consume grapefruit at least 100 to 200 gms daily to control and reduce high blood pressure. 

4. Celery

The celery has a high containing dose of the phytochemical 3-N-butylphthalide. This element helps greatly in controlling of high blood pressure. Phthalides help in relaxing the muscles inside and surrounding the arterial walls, and in such way creating more space for the blood to flow more easily. Simultaneously, it helps in reducing of stress hormones that tighten the blood vessels, which increases the possibility for high blood pressure.

If it is possible, it is best you consume at least one stalk of celery a day combined with a glass of water. You can also munch it throughout the day.

5. Coconut Water

People suffering from high blood pressure must provide a good hydration for their bodies on a daily basis. A dose of 8 to 10 glasses of water a day is considered to be optimal. Coconut Water has a high concentration of minerals like potassium, magnesium and vitamin C which help in lowering systolic blood pressure as it was found in a many studies around. A nice consideration is also to use coconut oil for cooking.

6. Honey

Honey has a soothing effect on your blood vessels and helps in reducing the pressure from the heart, in turn lowers high blood pressure. Consuming 1 or 2 tbsps of honey daily will help you in controlling hypertension. Taking two teaspoons of honey early in the morning on empty stomach is a very good option. You can otherwise mix 1 tsp of honey, 1 tsp of ginger juice and 2 teaspoons of powered cumin seeds and eat it two times a day. You can also consume the mixture of honey and basil juice on empty stomach regularly for better results.

7. Lemon

Lemon is one of the best remedies for hypertension. It makes the blood vessels soft and flexible removing their rigidness, making the blood pressure levels low. Lemon contains high amounts of Vitamin B, so regularly consuming lemon helps you prevent for heart failure. If you are having high blood pressure then you must drink fresh lemon juice as many times as possible. Drinking one glass lemon juice mixed with warm water every morning on empty stomach is good for health. Avoid adding salt or sugar for good results.

8. Garlic

Garlic processes the great properties that help you get blood pressure in control. Either raw or cooked form garlic helps you in reducing cholesterol level. Whenever you have your blood pressure level high then try eating 1 – 2 slightly crushed cloves of garlic regularly. As crushed garlic cloves generate hydrogen sulfide, which helps in promoting good flow of blood, decreases the pressure on the heart and gets rid of gas. You can also take 5 to 6 drops of garlic juice mixed with 4 teaspoons of water two times a day for better results.

9. Onion Juice

Onion is an effective remedy for lowering the high blood pressure level. You can eat one raw onion (medium sized) on a daily basis or consume the mixture of honey and onion juice. Taking 1/2 teaspoon of onion juice mixed with 1/2 teaspoon honey twice every day, will aid you in reducing the blood pressure level. You can notice a good improvement in your BP levels by taking onion juice twice a day for about 1 – 2 weeks.

10. Potato 

Boiled potatoes are good for lowering blood pressure and when potatoes are boiled with the skin they absorb fewer salts so it can be salt- free diet for Hypertensive patients. Potatoes also contain Magnesium and Calcium that are also beneficial in lowering blood pressure.

11. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds are an effective ingredient for lowering high blood pressure due to their high potassium and dietary fiber content. 

Boil one to two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in water for about two minutes, and then strain it. Put the seeds in a blender and mix it into a paste. Eat this paste twice a day, once in the morning on an empty stomach and once in the evening. Follow this remedy for two to three months to notice a significant improvement in your blood pressure level.

12. Watermelon

Watermelon is also an effective remedy for high blood pressure. It contains lycopene which is a very powerful antioxidant and is very beneficial for your heart and arteries. It reduces high blood pressure in various ways. Some ingredients are also extracted from its seeds which are very effective in dilating the blood vessels. This allows your blood to flow in your system smoothly which eventually lowers high blood pressure. 

13. Watermelon Seeds

Watermelon seeds contain a compound called cucurbocitrin, which helps widen the blood capillaries. At the same time, it also helps improve kidney functioning. This in turn reduces blood pressure levels and also helps a lot with arthritis.

Grind equal quantities of dried watermelon seeds and poppy seeds (khus khus). Take one teaspoon of this mixture in the morning on an empty stomach and again in the evening. Alternatively, add two teaspoons of gently crushed, dried watermelon seeds to one cup of boiled water. Steep it for about an hour, then strain it. Take four tablespoons of this water at regular intervals throughout the day.
