Cold temperatures and frequent use can have your soft skin looking like the Grand Canyon in the middle of winter. Your hands are one of the busiest parts of your body, used for several tasks throughout the day. Many people do not take proper care of their hands and they end up dry and rough, looking as though they belong to someone older.
But don’t lose hope. You can give your hands softening nourishment with the right skin care routine and the right products. You can also try some simple home remedies to enjoy softer, younger-looking hands.
Home Remedies for Dry and Rough Hands
1. Moisturize
Lotion is the easiest and most important way to keep your hands soft. At the store, lotion is available in dozens of scents and styles to meet your personal needs.
Moisturize your hands every time you wash time. Keep small bottles at regular places around the house, so you always have some on hand.
Look for lotions that contain shea butter, B vitamins, and retinol. These ingredients keep your skin soft long after you’ve applied the lotion.
Mineral oils and lanolin help to trap water in the skin. Lotions with lactic acid and urea have soothing qualities, as well. Glycerin and dimethicone help to moisturize, while hyaluronic acid can help retain that moisture.
2. Use Dish Gloves When You Wash Dishes
Dish soap is one of the most aggressive and irritating forms of soap for your hands. When you wash dishes, especially in the wintertime, it's a good idea to use a pair of yellow dish gloves to keep your hands dry. This is very true if you're submerging your hands in the water.
3. Milk Cream
Rub some fresh milk cream on your hands. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes, then rinse off your hands thoroughly with lukewarm water. You can use this remedy daily.
Alternatively, mix together 2 teaspoons of milk cream and 2 tablespoons of gram flour. Apply this paste on your hands. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Do this 2 or 3 times a week.
4. Clarified Butter
Clarified butter or ghee as it is popularly known is a super home remedy for dry hands. Take pure or homemade ghee and rub it well onto your hands. Do this 2-3 times a day for best results. The ghee not only moisturizes but also soothes minor cuts and cracks.
5. Honey
Rub a little honey all over your hands and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Repeat 1 or 2 times daily to enjoy soft hands.
Alternatively, mix equal amounts of honey and glycerin. Apply it on your hands, wait 10 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Do this once daily.
Another option is to add a few drops each of lemon juice and olive oil to 2 teaspoons of honey. Apply it on your hands, allow it to dry and then rinse it off with warm water. Use this remedy a few times a week.
6. Honey And Aloe Vera Gel
To get rid of dry, flaky and cracked skin on feet and hands you can use a mixture of honey and aloe Vera gel. Extract fresh aloe Vera gel and mix it with equal amount of honey. Mix both the ingredients well and then massage your hands/feet using this mixture. Let it stay for 10 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. This mixture will make your skin nourished, hydrated and will also prevent cracked dry skin. Repeat it 2-3 times a week for best results.
7. Aloe Vera And Almond Oil
Mixture of fresh aloe vera gel and almond is excellent for dry and rough hands. Take an aloe vera tube and slit it to remove fresh aloe vera gel. This gel has natural moisturizing properties which help to keep your hands moist whereas almond oil contains vitamin E which improves the texture of your skin. Mix aloe vera gel and almond oil properly and apply it on your hands every alternate day. It will help you to get rid of dry rough hands very soon.
8. Olive Oil
Do regular olive oil massages and make sure you liberally apply the oil to your hands. This gets rid of dryness and helps to moisturize the skin.
Massage your hands with some warm olive oil for 5 to 10 minutes twice daily to enjoy soft and smooth hands.
Mix equal amounts of olive oil and fine sugar. Rub this homemade scrub on your hands using light, circular motions for a few minutes. Wait 5 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water, pat dry and apply a light moisturizer. Use this remedy twice a week to soften your hands.
9. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is another great healer for dry and rough hands. It works as a natural cleansing and exfoliating agent that will not dry your skin. In addition, its protein content helps prevent water loss and keep the skin moisturized.
Prepare a mixture with 2 tablespoons of ground oatmeal, ½ to 1 teaspoon of honey and a little water to make a paste. You can also add a little freshly squeezed lemon juice. Rub this mixture on your hands. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.
Follow either of these remedies once a week.
10. Stay Well Hydrated
If you're not getting enough water, your skin will dry out. Diet plays a big role in your skin health, making it important that you get at least 8 glasses, or around two liters of water each day.
Alcohol can dehydrate you, which can in turn result in dryer skin. If you struggle with dry skin, avoid the overconsumption of alcohol.
